Miss America Gives Kids a Royal Treatment

She came without fanfare. Without a flowing gown or an entourage. Without the need for a special introduction.

And yet, when this year’s Miss America, Caressa Cameron, sat down to read a Dr. Seuss book to kids and their families at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, it was clear someone special was in the room.

Cameron was in Grand Rapids on behalf of Amway Global and its Artistry beauty brand. She visited the hospital to promote national Read Across America Day, for which she read Dr. Seuss’s “The Things You Could Do.” With her soft voice and engaging manner, Cameron got smiles back from her audience...and a request from one to join him sitting on the floor for one more story. Cameron obliged. She later posed for pictures with children and their parents and had a spare crown to share with those who wanted a photo taken wearing their own tiara. She also autographed and distributed Dr. Seuss books donated by Amway Global.

The event featured a birthday cake (Dr. Seuss would have celebrated his 106th) and a party-themed room. Guests were joined by representatives from Amway Global, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Miracle Network.

Cameron later visited Amway Global headquarters to see how its Artistry brand products are produced. Artistry is currently a major sponsor of the Miss America pageant.

For the record, Caressa Cameron is a 22-year-old Virginia native and soon to be a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where she is majoring in communications. Her name came courtesy of one of her brothers — she has three and is the only girl in the family. She is an advocate of physical fitness and HIV and AIDS awareness.

Thanks to Amway Global’s Lindsay Pott and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Marketing Communications Coordinator Anne Veltema.
