Crazy, Deranged Fools

Over a year ago I started reading the blog posts by illustrator, author, Hugh MacLeod. I was really taken by his Crazy, Deranged Fools meme. When I read that the Grand Rapids Social Diary CDF's were looking for folks to contribute to their journal I thought about a post I had made in February 2009 for one of my blogs, Craic OnThe Grand (currently in a deep state of hibernation). It was basically a list of some really interesting, cool, and quirky businesses and people that were doing their own thing and had created a signature experience in Grand Rapids. I've been a customer and personally know most of the owners of these businesses. Not only were they good people but ran a good business too; one of the tenets of being a crazy, deranged fool!

So, below were my 2009 nominations. All are pretty solid today too! And just for fun, I included a 2010 list of crazy, deranged fools.

2009 Crazy, Deranged Fools: Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Nominations
(From February 20, 2009)

My business nominations for Grand Rapids own CDF's Hall of Fame. What are yours?

Growco This place, tucked away on Michigan St. has everything that is needed for hydroponic gardening. I took a class there on a Wednesday night and it was hopping. A niche of niche.

Cannonsburg Village Maybe one of the coolest four corners in Michigan. You have a tavern, a gas station, a meat market, a breakfast joint and a wine and beer store. It even has it's own mayor, Don Kurylowicz, you know.

Rowsters A highly specialized coffee roaster tucked away on Cherry St. Kurt is passionate about coffee and friends.

Herman's Boy Floyd has created a truly iconic business in Rockford. It features a bakery, a coffee roaster, jerky, barbecue, pots, pans, fudge, knicks and knacks. 100% family owned and operated.

Founder's Brewery The attached screen shot says it all....

Martha's Vineyard I think this place has been around forever! It remains one of the most unique destinations in Grand Rapids.

2010 Crazy, Deranged Fools: Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Nominations
February 13, 2010

Here are my two new nominations:

Ambrose Adam has something really cool going on here. Education, design, joy and revolution.

Green Giftz Karen has created a very distinctive business. Plus she is always gracious with her time. A great mentor. Who am I missing?

John Rumery is a father, husband, son, blogger, elite barbecuer, WYCE 88.1FM programmer, teacher, entrepreneur, raconteur, Godfather and a bit of a late bloomer! (so the best is yet to come!). You can follow him on twitter at @JohnRumery.
