February 12, 2010 - Grand Rapids, Michigan To Love and be Loved I believe that within each person, there lays a deep yearning to love and be loved. In examining dating practices around our beautiful area, I've become a prime witness to the continuously evolving difficulties many face. Dating, according to Wikipedia, refers to"... meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity."So, why is it so difficult? This modern form of dating is completely different from ten years ago, or even five years ago for that matter. I believe this is due, in large part, to the emergence of social networking sites such as Facebook & Twitter. While, there is also been a growing popularity of dating sites and electronic communication. All of this inhibits the ability to make a genuine connection, especially when you know the entirety of a person before the first face to face contact. While these "virtual walls" are set in place for some as a matter of prescreening, it can quickly become a hindrance on a healthy dating life. As a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, I have always had faith that I would find the one. I believed that it would play out like a picture-perfect movie. However, lately I have my doubts. I have been playing the dating game by using our generational forms of technology to communicate with potential love interests. Through my experiences, I have come to realize a few things. Therefore, in lue of the wonderfully exciting and romantic holiday upon us, I am going to give some dating tips which I have discovered. How you dress says a lot about you. Think of how you want to be perceived by the other, and dress to fit that image, as long as it is "you." Remember, you only get one first impression. Chivalry and manors are NOT dead. Do not overestimate the open door, casual compliments, and dinner etiquette. They may seem small, but they will leave a big impression. Appear somewhat mysterious; do not tell the other everything about you on the first date. The first date should be general knowledge, not your life history. Be yourself. Why spend the time creating an image and put effort into maintaining it? It is much easier to just be you and let things happen as they do. Confidence is vital and sexy. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. There is nothing more appealing than someone that is confident, while there is nothing more repugnant than arrogance. See if these work for you, and maybe if they do, we can start calling me "HitchGR." Now I am going to leave you with a quote from one of the smartest people I know, my mother. I believe it to be the soul truth to dating. She told me "If you don't take a chance, you won't ever have a chance." It seems simple, but that first step can lead you to a fairly tale. Best of luck to you in this dating chaos.
