Vertigo opens its doors and celebrates National Record Store Day

Vertigo joined more than 700 independent record stores across the country in celebrating the third annual National Record Store Day, an event honoring music and local business. Live bands played all day, and the event was free to the public.

As mp3s and other digital formats encroach on CD sales, and big box retailers gain more market share, National Record Store Day was a chance for Vertigo Music to say thank you to our loyal customers and to acknowledge the local record store's role in the community.

Vertigo is always a place where people can share their music, ideas and skills. Independent music stores, like Herm Baker's, foster homegrown talent and provide a nurturing environment for the arts.

As a part of South Division's diverse culture since 2000, Vertigo Music has been an integral part of the reanimation of the Heartside District, and is currently a stable and vital supporter of the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids.

Supporters of Record Store Day at Vertigo Music included Founders Brewing, WYCE, Mos Eisley, All City Kicks, Bohemia Too, the Intersection, and the Orbit Room.

Bands included New Medicine, Radiator Hospital, Lazy Genius, Amoebas, Ribbons of Song, and My New Black Tooth.

The original concept behind Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.

Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.
