Adventurous residents from all over Grand Rapids came down to Reeds Lake on a chilly but sunny February afternoon. Participants collected pledges, put on a crazy costumes and jumped into frigid water.

Entertainment Reporter Emily Richett and Anchor/Reporter Mike Avery from Fox 17 even took the plunge into icy water the day before live on the air to promote the Polar Plunge. Brian Edwards, Publisher of REVUE Magazine also jumped in. Watch Video!

There were 19 Polar Plunges around the state of Michigan this season including: Alpena, Ann Arbor, Belleville, Cheboygan, Detroit, Fenton, Gaylord, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Marquette, Mecosta/Osceola, Mount Pleasant, Muskegon, Pinckney, Saginaw/Bay City, Stanton, Traverse City.

After each plunging event, the participants enjoy a post-plunge party and awards ceremony. For a minimum donation of $50 anyone can take the plunge. Each plunger received an incentive prize and an official 2010 Polar Plunge t-shirt. Other incentive prizes include a Polar Plunge cooler, a Polar Plunge sweatshirt, a Polar Plunge jacket.

Participants who raised more than $2,500 got a Polar Plunge jacket and entry into a trip drawing.

Donations were raised by collecting pledges from friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc.

The Polar Plunge was made possible by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a group of police officers and corrections personnel committed to raising funds and awareness for SOMI.

Proceeds from the Polar Plunge support the year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than 17,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities who live in Michigan.
