Big Bands n' Romance Gala 13 Feburary 2010 ~ Amway Grand Plaza ~ Downtown Top hat. Check. Tails. Still fit. Dancing shoes. Good as new. With that -- and your best girl or best guy -- you were ready for the Big Bands 'n Romance Gala on Valentine's Day Eve in the Ambassador Ballroom at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The Amway took a page from the '30s and '40s to create an atmosphere reminiscent of the days when names such as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Gene Krupa were cool. The setting was classic. The evening began with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails just outside the ballroom. Inside, the lighting was subdued. There were tables for just two, each adorned with a single rose and a subtle sprinkling of faux diamonds. Guests were served an elegant dinner by smartly attired and personable waitstaff. This was capped by a seductive dessert buffet... enough chocolate to make Hershey's seem stingy. Then it was time to dance. The featured band was The River City Jazz Band Ensemble with vocalist Kathy Wagner up front. They were in the groove from the outset, blending soulful, slow dance tunes with up tempo numbers that made the dancers seem a blur. The dance floor was seldom wanting for participants. There were many, in fact, who came to show off their ballroom chops -- they seemed to float above the floor as they moved. The gala drew around 300 guests, many who stayed overnight at the hotel to take advantage of a special package rate. It was over all too soon. But not soon forgotten. Two tips of the top hat for the Amway staff and a round of free drinks for the band.
