Celebrate Mary K.'s Mission and Medal
09.09.2010 - 5:30pm - 9:30pm - Amway Grand Plaza Hotel - Imperial Ballroom

f you know Mary K. Hoodhood or her impact on childhood hunger in Grand Rapids, you know she is a woman on a mission...a mission that the President himself has now recognized with one of our nation's highest honors.

On August 4, 2010, President Obama honored Mary K.'s lifetime of service with the Presidential Citizens Medal.

This is the second highest honor a civilian can receive, and it recognizes Americans who have performed exe...mplary deeds of service for their country or fellows citizens.

Now that Mary K. has returned from Washington, D.C., our community is invited to celebrate this honor and the amazing, unstoppable woman who earned it!

___________________________________________________________________

Join emcees Tony Gates and Rachael Ruiz for a fun, relaxed community celebration honoring the life and accomplishments of Mary K. Hoodhood.

It's all in the details:

* Local favorite, Mid-Life Crisis, will be rocking out on the main floor so that guests may dance the night away.

* Many of the Presidents you know and love will be on hand for quick history lessons and photo opportunities; including George Washington, Abe Lincoln and more.

* Mary K.'s medal will be available for viewing, along with some other goodies she received from the President.

* Don't forget to grab your swag bag on the way out! (first 500 guests)

* Because Mary K. believes that this medal is everyone's achievement, all guests in attendance will receive a medal of their very own upon entering the party.

* Enjoy the tasty treats and scrumptious hors d'oeuvres created by the talented Amway Grand Plaza Hotel catering services as well as the cash bar.

* Dress to dance the night away or join the party right after work, this is a celebration for everyone!

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Mary K. Hoodhood Endowment at Kids' Food Basket, which will help ensure the sustainability of the attack on childhood hunger.

Fashion's Night Out|Grand Rapids|AK Rikk's
09.10.2010 - 6:00pm - http://www.facebook.com/#!/FashionsNightOutGrandRapids?ref=ts

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT 2010 in GR:

The City of Grand Rapids in association with AK Rikk’s is pleased to announce their participation of Fashion’s Night Out: Shop For Something Good. AK Rikk’s on behalf of the City of Grand Rapids is recognized as the official and exclusive organizer of Fashions Night Out September 10th 2010!

BASIC'S ABOUT FASHION’S NIGHT OUT: Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) is an unprecedented global initiative created to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry’s economy, and put the fun back in shopping.

For one night last September, in New York City and twelve other cities around the world,(now including GR) designers, celebrities, models, and fashion editors hosted exciting, one-of-a-kind events in stores open after-hours to the public. Shoppers were able to see Sarah Jessica Parker singing standards with Oscar de la Renta, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen tending bar, as well as Michael Kors, Justin Timberlake, Kate Hudson, Rihanna and Gwen Stefani (just to name a few) at various stores throughout NYC supporting the industry. Retailers saw a surge of new shoppers and increased sales, while customers relished the street-party atmosphere.

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT ON A GLOBAL LEVEL: In the United States, FNO is a collaboration between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. Around the world, countries led by at least twelve international Vogue editions, will once again participate in the festivities. Nations including England, China, Japan, India, Italy, France, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Russia, Greece, and Taiwan!

CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS: A percentage of the sales from the Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt will be donated to the NYC AIDS Fund. Be sure to check back in August for retailer information and locations.

CBS SPECIAL: The making of Fashion’s Night Out will be the subject of an hour-long, prime-time special on CBS, Wednesday, September 15, at 8 p.m. EST. Cameras will follow celebrities, designers, editors, and retailers as they prepare for year two of FNO, taking viewers behind the scenes during months of intense planning and tracking the night itself as it unfolds across the globe. This special will also look beyond the glamour to the real-life implications at stake, focusing on the individuals working in all parts of the industry, from salespeople to design staff, for whom the vibrancy of the fashion business is a question of economic survival. You won’t want to miss it!

ArtPrize 2010
09.22.2010 - September 22 - 10, 2010 - Grand Rapids

ArtPrize is a radically open competition. Open to any artist in the world who can find space. Open to anybody in Grand Rapids, Michigan who wants to create a venue. Open to a vote from anyone who attends.

There are enough art competitions where the winners are decided by a jury of experts. That's not the competition we are creating. We're looking for a giant conversation to happen between artists and the public. That is why we developed a radically open framework for this event, which gives power to everyone's opinion.

When everyone's opinion counts, everyone is included in the conversation.

This is the prize breakdown of the largest art competition in the world:
1st place: $250,000
2nd: $100,000
3rd: $50,000
4th: $7,000
5th: $7,000
6th: $7,000

Prospecto Musical Showcase and Sonic Experience
09.23.2010 - 8pm - Downtown

Prospecto Musical Showcase & Sonic ExperienceWelcome to The Mitten. For better or worse we signed up for this place and this is where we live. Resting on a backdrop of beautiful oceans of fresh water juxtaposed to the ghosts of mechanized industrial livelihoods, Michigan is one of the most interesting places on earth. The Upper Peninnsula gave you the iron for your steel (thanks Ohio, sorry about the war). If you are sitting in a chair, it was most likely designed or manufactured here. We brought you cars, delicious fruit, pasties, Michael Moore, The Wings, The Pistons (don't worry about the Lions). In a post outsourcing world we have felt the hardships, usually the worst, but when time gets tough people create, and considering the amount of tough times we've had, there are plenty of songs to write.

While Detroit is a world-renown pillar of exceptional musical offerings, her sister Grand Rapids on the west side of the state has had some quite impressive gems. Al Green, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mustard Plug, The Verve Pipe, and James Maynard Keenan of Tool all hail from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids is a beautiful midwestern city littered with college campuses and churches. The dichotomy of old guard Protestant suits juxtaposed to the Bohemian intelligentsia - this town is sweltering with creativity.

So the Prospecto family decided it was our duty to pull off a showcase for the great talent in Michigan and in doing so we invited some friends from around the country to anchor in support. Excellent Nationals, excellent locals, with one common thread- giving you an excellent experience. So get over to Grand Rapids, September 22 -25th, the Mitten is kind.

Style Battle 2010
09.30.2010 - 6pm - Activesite - 40 Monroe and Eve at the B.O.B.

On September 30, 2010, in the midst of ArtPrize, the highly anticipated and radical art competition, Spotlight616 will host a fashion event unlike anything Grand Rapids has ever seen before. The Spotlight616 team will showcase an impressive array of independent clothing retailers, photographers, makeup artists, models and hairstylists that can be found local to Grand Rapids. It will be delivered in a fresh and innovative way, with the audience determining the grand prize. Spotlight616 will not follow a standard fashion show format; instead, stations of teams will be working in their own locations set up throughout the room.

TEAM MEMBERS:

  • 1 clothing retailer
  • 1 photographer
  • 1 hairstylist
  • 1 makeup artist
  • 5 models

Each team will collaborate to create five completed “looks” - one for each model - over the course of the evening. The public will be encouraged to walk from station to station to observe what the teams are creating at any given time. The audience will also have the opportunity to vote on their favorite finished look and determine the overall winning team. Selected team photographers will be shooting, editing and projecting images during the voting process.

CONCEPT:

This style of event for fashion is known as “Style Battling” and it is a rising trend which we are excited to bring to Grand Rapids. We will not be following this exact format, as our teams will have more time allotted to create their looks and each look will have to be photographed. The grand prize will also be awarded/divided based on overall completed looks, rather than just the fashion design. When the allotted time is up, all of the teams' models will show off their completed looks in a grand finale walk.

PRIZES:

Up for grabs is a cash prize of $2,000 to be split amongst the retailer, photographer, hair stylist and make-up artist from the winning team. Models from the winning team will each receive a $100 cash prize as well as a fashion portfolio photo shoot valued at $350 for each of the 5 models. And for one lucky top model winner, who may be chosen from any of the teams, The Matthew Agency will offer an exclusive modeling contract!

ENTERTAINMENT:

The Spotlight616 team is excited to bring to Grand Rapids international DJ John Acquaviva, who will be playing during the fashion show as well as at our after party. Known for his versatility in playing and producing, John is one of the most widely accomplished and critically acclaimed DJs in the electronic music scene worldwide. Rounding out our line-up are local DJs SuperDre, Nešto, Jon Pape and Sonnrize.
